On our second day in Africa, the driver who came to pick us up was named Moses. We chatted with him on our way to the embassy and asked him about Gaborone. We told him we were interested in church and he told us we could come with him, so one Sunday we decided to take him up on his offer, and we attended the 8 AM English service at the Assembly of God church. As it turned out we were the only 2 white people standing in church and we were quickly warmly welcomed and introduced to everyone after the service. The service itself was like most services, the music was a bit more Gospel like but beyond that it was fairly familiar. However the people are full of passion and love the Lord, they lift their hands and really get into the music.
As we left the service Jacob and I discussed the experience and we both realized how we were struck by the comments of one gentleman. He was a fundraising chair and he was trying to encourage people to give for a new sanctuary they are building, and he said “Life is a project, when you stop working on yourself that’s when you’ll go”. We both seemed to find that we understood what he meant, and how true this was. We are always trying to figure out what we should do with our lives and find the answer. We ponder and ponder and ponder, thinking gosh I should figure out what I’m doing. However this comment “Life is a project” is so true, it is continually evolving and it’s ok to not have an exact plan. It reminded me how when my dad turned 60 he told me, “Amy, I’m 60 and I’m still trying to figure out what to do with my life”. So this in mind, I am coming to relax and find my zen in Botswana time.
